I forgot how great the "heal selection tool" is in Gimp and how simple it is to use. Basically all I did was use the "lasso tool" to select the portion of the image I wished to remove. The first image I decided to remove was the "light keeper's house", followed by a storage shed. It took me less than 1-2 minutes to complete the task in Gimp. I even tweaked the colors in the second photo with the the aide of Gimp's "curve tool".
Gimp's heal selection tool, under "filters" is great for removing unwanted items.
