The Heron you see was a good 500 ft away(or 170 meters) from me, the last photo will show you my exact view with the naked eye. The only thing keeping me from buying a Nikon with a larger zoom, is the fact it would just be to costly. A camera with the lens to duplicate this exact shot, would be impossible to hold up by hand and requite the use of a tripod always. I know the quality would be far better with the Nikon, but since I'm not shoot for National Geographic and my budget is more in tune with prices at the Dollar Tree, I find it's hard to beat the Fuji HS30 for my personal needs. Now that they have come out with an HS50 with even a greater zoom, I would love to have it too. The price is $500 now, but if it drops to $350, I just might get a second camera. *no the tall grass you see in the last photo isn't my yard, I finally gave into mowing mine yesterday. The vacant lot next to me, does have some tall grass. This is how I gauge when to mow mine!. When my lawn becomes taller than the one you see here, it's time for me to mow or if I become afraid to step through the yard.(not "keeping up with the Joneses", thank goodness none of the Joneses live next to me)
