Finally Rebooting after 2 years
It's been almost a year since I ran any distance. Running even 50 feet over the past year has proved impossible. I had injured my leg moving a large tree off our shoreline, wading in frigid lake waters last February. The 60 ft tree that did me in. It was just a little to much weight for me to push off by myself. Since that time, I've had trouble going up and down any steps or any grade. I didn't go to the Doctor, because I knew he would advise surgery. Instead I decided to take a wait and see approach. I know the body has a way of telling you how bad things are and when you are pushing things to far. I decided my approach would be to take things including walking at a slower pace. I even wore a knee brace from time to time. There were numerous months I had to wear it daily. Still I was very careful not to over exert my knee. Eventually I started back into my routine of walking longer distances again. I was far from that 12 minute a mile pace I had walked a few years before. Over the summer my pace was back to being respectable(14 minute range). Still I was afraid to run. Every now and then I would try running a few steps, but my knee immediately told me "No". . Over the fall months I noticed I know longer had any pains and that my leg strength had really improved. Push mowing my parents and sister's yards helped me regain my lateral movement in my knee over this time. Once the winter set in, I went into hibernation. Only recently had I resumed my walking regiment, typically 5k several times a week. My new gadget " Fitbit One" inspired me to increase my workouts. It enabled me to monitor multiple activities, including my sleep. Today while on the track I decided to throw caution to the wind. I started with a series of short runs. The first was just a 100 ft, the next 200 feet, 500 ft, and 800 feet. I was praying the whole time my knee wouldn't buckle. Before I finished I decided to attempt one complete lap around the track, which I successfully completed. My run time was far from impressive. The fact that I could even run at all was utterly amazing to me. I know I'm still far from the finish line as to where I want to be. At least now, I know I can leave the start line and for that I'm very thankful.
