I decided to take "how do you eat an elephant approach". Instead of letting the program overwhelm me, I decided that the answer to tackling gimp, was the same as the answer to eating an elephant. You can do it, if you do it one bite at a time. Savor each bite along the way and before you know it you can eat even more..
I'm still learning Gimp. It is such a massive program I don't think you could possible learn all of Gimp in a year. You can however learn the main things that you would normally like to use for editing your photos. Now if you wish to dive into creating a painting, that will involve a little more time and completely different focus.
So far this is what I've learned. My first Gimp Edits and latest Gimp Edits are in the same album. The progression is not in sequence, so all I can tell you is that my latest edits are the Graduation Pictures. I'm still learning but if you click on the link below you will get an idea why I love this program. I've made a few comments on what I did on some, but not all of the photos. If you need to know how I did it, chances are a found the how to on YouTube.
I still use Picasa a lot of times for some final tweaks, because there are some features that do things faster, especially Picasa "straighten" photo. You want always use Picasa, but I still find it's the best way to share your photos via twitter, facebook or email. When it comes to ordering photos it's great to use. Even though I upload photos to Walmart, I love uploading to Walgreens, because there cropping doesn't cut off your 4x 6's.
Gimp 2.7 will be released in the fall, I posted a neat new feature clip on my blog http://ncoutlander1.blogspot.com
