Proud Dad

NP made me a very proud father this week. He brought home a good report card and he landed the lead role in his school play. Good grades I expect, because I know he is smart. NP just doesn't always achieve his full potential in the academic arena. Landing the lead role in a school play was a complete shock! I really didn't expect such results. I knew he was going to try out for the school play and I figured he might get a line or two to say, but never did I expect him to land the lead role. What amazes me, is that he competed against 50 other students with a lot more drama experience. NP who has "nada" drama experience, except for that he's experienced in real life, being a child of divorce.

My son also made state honor's chorus. The way he described honor's chorus to me was, "Dad, this is the "best of the best". Over Twelve hundred students from all over the state audition, but only 200 are selected. It takes a student lot of hardwork and talent to make it, so I'm very proud of him. All that work and you only have one concert, which will be tomorrow at the "Steven's Center" in Winston-Salem.

My reason for writing this post is to dispel some prejudices. I know there are people who view anyone who fishes(especially for catfish), as being uneducated, uncultured and redneck. My goal is to teach my son to appreciate all the differences in life without prejudice. I hope by doing so my son will become a more well rounded individual. He has great grand parents, aunts, uncles and cousins who are willing to help mold him into becoming a fine young man. I try to do my part, but as the old expression goes "it takes a village to raise a child". I'm blessed that my son has one great village.

I know this is bragging and I'm never one to brag. I'm just as proud of him doing this as I was the day caught that 42lb catfish. Every parents needs to shout out their pride, which is what I'm doing. Hopefully there will be more achievements and honor for NP, but if not I'm thankful for the one's he has achieved in his young life. The achievements won't the change the world, but they will help in changing the way a child views the world. We learn by trying and doing. What more could you ask of your child?

*I posted this early this morning. My father called me tonight and told me NP was on the front page of the local paper, so I felt I would post the article with his picture. Just like the boy interview, NP practiced football 5 days week for 2 and half hours, plus practicing for honors chorus. It takes a lot of work and dedication to achieve this honor, that's why I'm proud of him. Click here to view.
