The following is a flathead catfish weight chart I made up. I used a flathead fish calculator from web site to come up with the weights according to length. I believe that the chart is pretty accurate, however let me stress that it is just an average based soley on the length of the fish. I still try to measure the girth of the fish when I can remember to, however it doesn't factor in on this particular chart.
The 40 inch catfish NP Caught, we believe actually weighed more than 42 pounds. I've read that it is possible for two large flatheads just like two people, to weigh differently. The friend who helped NP net his 42 pounder, lifts weights all the time and he actually thought the flathead weighed 50 pounds. We however are stuck to the chart, until we can buy a fish scale that will help us be more accurate. We don't like any of the scales with hooks. NP has a birthday coming up soon and I hope he will get one of those lip and grip fish scales.
Please feel free to use our chart. It really pays to keep a cloth tape measure and a camera with you when ever you go fishing. We are firm believers in releasing any trophy fish.
