Sometimes even I get lucky when fishing

Posted by Picasa This has been one those most memorable spring/summer for me and my son. NP is 13 and has really come into his own as a fisherman. It started this spring catching Crappie. The old saying, "when the dogwoods are in bloom" holds true when pursuing these fish. We quit fishing for Crappie around the end of May when the water temperatures make the fish head for deeper depths. Even though these aren't large fish, they provided all the fun we needed. A person has to catch fish in order to develop an appreciation of fishing. The time we spent together fishing for them was priceless.

Spending time surrounded by nature's beauty is always worthwhile. The opportunity to teach your son the basic of landing a fish is a lot of fun. Fishing has instilled  in me over the years the value of  patience and the the belief that every cast presents a new opportunities. When you think about it the lessons you learn from fishing aren't really that much different from life. .

You can see by our postings, that the our catches have gotten bigger and so have our smiles. I don't think we are really any better fisherman than the day we first set out in our small boat. I  know that the time spent fishing with my son brings us closer together.

NP and I both have tried  and continue to learn new fishing techniques. We both share the belief and dream that we can always catch one bigger.  Perhaps one day we will catch that state record fish, we did one time before, but didn't realize it at the time. .

Our catch no matter how large or small is inconsequential. Please don't get me wrong, we sure do like to catch big ones. We've learned that each species of fish is unique. Pound for pound some of the smaller species(bream) pull just as hard as a big Flathead cat. My son and I both have tried to appreciate the beauty of each fish we catch. Fishing may seem cruel to some and I can't argue that it's not. We do our best to release all fish, immediately after catching them.
